You should avoid rushing out to buy your own modified means of transportation and wait before arranging any modifications to an existing vehicle. If you do not comply with the criteria, you will not be reimbursed for the costs.

Always look up where the closest parking space is before you get in the car. That way, you can avoid unpleasant surprises.

Useful tips for smart ways to transport your lesson materials are:

• Digital: digitise your textbooks or use digitised books and bring a device (such as a laptop) with you.
• Suggestion: study in the library, so you do not need to take your books home with you.
• Make copies: bring a photocopied portion of a book with you.
• Library: read and/or study in the library, so you do not need to take your books home with you.
• Read along: read along with a classmate during lectures so you do not have to bring your own book.
• Carrying materials: ask for help with carrying and lifting.
• Trolley: use a wheeled suitcase or shopping trolley.

Driving a car gives a sense of freedom. You can go where you want, when you want. If you have a disability, that freedom is extra important. For example, if you are dependent on a wheelchair, have a prosthesis or suffer from annoying health problems. With a driving licence, you can lead a mobile and independent life. Do you have a physical disability that affects your ability to drive? Then you need a Certificate of Fitness, which you get by applying to the CBR for a Personal Declaration. For example, CBR must first assess your driving ability. And your car may have to be modified. For your personal situation, always contact a doctor, an insurer or the CBR first.

Good to know: every situation is different. Whether you get a reimbursement depends on many different things. On your disability, for instance. And the car you have. It can take a long time to arrange an adaptation to your car. It can take up to six months from the application to the final modification. You can sometimes get a reimbursement to have your car adapted to your physical disability. Do you want to take advantage of this? Then it is smart to arrange this first. You can often no longer apply for reimbursement if you have already had the adaptation done. This is because often the cheapest solution is reimbursed. So always apply for reimbursement before you have your car modified.

Insurers want to know if you have a physical disability that can affect driving. You must therefore declare this when taking out car insurance. Then you can get compensation for an adapted car from the UWV. You will then discuss the necessary adjustments with a UWV employment expert. The UWV works with regular suppliers who specialise in adapting cars, so you do not arrange this yourself. You may also be given a modified car to borrow.
