Possibilities for a low-stimulus study area

A low-stimulus study area provides you with the space, peace and quiet you may require in connection with your special need. In a space with few stimuli, you are better able to concentrate on your assignment, test or exam. Ask your educational institution about the possibilities for a low-stimulus study area and try to explain why you need this in clear terms!

Accommodation schemes

Schemes at your educational institution

Many educational institutions have a designated quiet area or room, for instance in the library or in one or more of the other buildings. If you do not know where these areas are located, ask your study adviser or a member of the library staff.

Below, a number of examples are given of the other possibilities for aids and adjustments. These options can differ from one educational institution to the next. There may also be other additional options besides these accommodations. Be sure to read about the possibilities under ‘Nationwide schemes’ as well.

Nationwide schemes

In the Netherlands, there are also nationwide schemes that might provide you with financial assistance for purchasing the accommodations you need to be successful in your studies. In some cases, you can request aids from the Social Security Agency (UWV) or receive funds from them for that purpose. Examples of aids are a speech-to-text reporter or sign-language interpreter, computer equipment or a modified chair. Please note: do not go out and buy the aids yourself without talking to the Social Security Agency first. If you do, you run the risk of an unpleasant surprise if reimbursement turns out not to be an option!

Have a look at the other facilities, accommodations or schemes that might be helpful for you, too.

What can my educational institution do for me?

Antwoord

Try to get to the lecture hall on time, so you can choose the seat that works best for you. Write down/record important information. Ask if it is possible to record the class (if a recording is not already being made). You can also ask someone else to take notes for you.

What can the Social Security Agency do for me in terms of reimbursement for accommodations?

Antwoord

The Social Security Agency has a network of permanent suppliers for the procurement and reimbursement of accommodations. In many cases, they are able to purchase such accommodations at a discount. For this reason, you should always talk to the Social Security Agency about the possibilities first.
