Information about adjusted internships

If you are unable to work the required number of hours at your internship each week, there are a number of solutions you can discuss with your study adviser or student counsellor.

Possibilities adjustments

  • Fewer hours each week or spreading out the internship over a longer period.
  • Another potential option is for you to do fewer internship hours and complete an alternative assignment. This alternative assignment must be based on the learning objectives of the internship and the competencies you are supposed to acquire.

It is therefore always a good idea to discuss whether – if all parties agree – the internship could be shortened and/or part of it could be completed in another way.

The tips below will help you with this.

Tips

  • After you have been hired, ask your company if you can start a week (or two) earlier (often during the summer holidays). In these weeks you can get used to it, meet your colleagues, read internal documents and make preparations. As soon as you start on September 1 or February, you will start with your school assignment.
  • Need rest? Ask if you can take a nap, for example for an hour. That may be crazy for you and for the other person, but after that you will be productive again.
  • Make agreements with your study counselor about the number of hours you can do an internship and for how long. Perhaps you can spread the internship over a longer period of time or do fewer hours per week. Make agreements about this with your supervisor at your educational institution and the internship company.
  • Test the workplace: before you start, you can ask if it is possible to check your workplace.
  • If it is not possible to do an internship, you can discuss with your study counselor in other ways you can achieve the competences that are required to successfully complete your studies.
