Problems with getting to or physically accessing the degree programme or internship

The problems you experience in connection with getting to or physically accessing a location may have a variety of causes. For example, perhaps the building at your educational institution or internship company has not been accessibly designed. Or maybe your own mobility is limited due to a chronic illness or physical disability. In that case, the obstacle you encounter might be that you cannot enter the school building or internship location using your mobility aid. You might be unable to use the lift or find a parking space close to your educational building or internship company. All these factors may affect your academic performance.

Support with getting places or physical accessibility

A range of facilities, accommodations and schemes are available at your educational institution and nationally, which may be very helpful to you and might make it easier to achieve success in your degree programme. As a student who struggles with getting to or the physical accessibility of your degree programme or internship, you might have a need for the following:

  • Accessibility of buildings. As a result of your disability, you might run into problems related to the accessibility of your school building. This might be because there is no lift, for instance, because of raised thresholds or kerbs you cannot cross or because you are unable to park nearby. Various adjustments are possible that may improve the accessibility of such buildings.
  • Guidance and advice. There are a number of people at school who could help you with this. Get in touch with these people if you encounter obstacles during your degree programme.

Have a look at the other facilities, accommodations or schemes that might be helpful for you, too.

Tips

Attending lectures and learning

Antwoord
  • Parking space: look up where the closest parking space is, or ask someone, before you go.
  • Parking pass: if you will be driving your car to class, request a parking pass so you can park in the car park.
  • Accessibility: an accessible and adjusted lecture hall or classroom. If this room is not accessible, you have the right to request accommodations via your study adviser or study counsellor. The possibility of holding all subsequent lectures in an accessible lecture hall can then be explored.
  • Webcam/online lectures: you can use a webcam for lessons you are unable to attend or online classes that can be viewed online via the internet or intranet.
  • No first period: if necessary, you could avoid scheduling a class in the first period of each day to accommodate issues with getting up, transportation and so on.

Transporting lesson material

Antwoord
  • Digital: you can have your textbooks digitised or bring them with you in digital form on your laptop or tablet.
  • Extra set: extra books that you can leave at your educational institution, in addition to the set you keep at home.
  • Make copies: bring a photocopied portion of a book with you.
  • Library: you can read and/or study in the library, so you do not need to take your books home with you.
  • Read along: read along with a classmate during lectures instead of bringing your own lesson material.
  • Carrying materials: get help with carrying and lifting.
  • Trolley: use a wheeled suitcase or shopping trolley.
  • Lockers: ask if there are lockers you can use to store your books at school.
