Information about the scheme when you, as a student, have issues with your parents
Student finance consists of a basic grant, an additional grant, a student travel product, and a potential loan. The amount of the additional grant depends, among other factors, on the income of your legal parents. Are you experiencing issues with your parent(s) as a student? In certain circumstances, you can ask DUO to disregard your parent(s)' income. This might enable you to receive a (higher) additional grant.
Income disregarded for additional grant eligibility
Below, we describe various situations in which you, as a student, may have no contact or support from a parent:
- Parent does not recognize the student: The parent has not formally acknowledged that the student is their child.
- No contact since an early age: The student has had no contact with the parent since before their 12th birthday.
- Serious and long-term conflict: The student has a profound and ongoing conflict with the parent, which involves more than just financial issues.
- Parental authority terminated: A judge has ruled that the parent no longer has parental authority over the student.
- Student as a refugee without parents: The student has arrived in the Netherlands as a refugee without their parents.
- Parent's whereabouts unknown: The location of the student's parent is unknown.
- Unpaid child support: The parent has not paid the court-ordered child support (financial assistance) for at least 12 consecutive months.
