How study scheduling can help you

  • A study schedule is a helping hand for you. The schedule is a way, not a purpose. With a schedule, you can keep a better eye on whether you have enough time for the things you need to do. And if you turn out to have too little time, you can still make adjustments.
  • A study schedule also gives you a better idea of how long it will take you to complete a task or assignment. This can help you with your next planning.
  • With a good planning about when you will do what, you don't have to worry so much about what you still have to do.

Getting started with study schedule

For effective planning, it is important to know what you need to do, how much time it will take, and how much time you have available.

  1. Make an overview of what you need to do.
  2. Map out how much time you think you will need for each assignment. Keep in mind the deadline. It is important that you take sufficient (extra) time for the assignments you find difficult to do. Also schedule time for repeating, for example, learning for tests/assessments or exams, not to forget sufficient breaks. In doing so, make sure you have a space where you can work quietly.
  3. See how much time you have. Because variety with other activities outside your studies, such as sports or meeting up with acquaintances, is important. So make sure you spread the hours out over the day and week. After all, not everyone can be effective for hours because of physical or mental condition.
  4. Check if your available time you have will fit your assignments. Copy your schedule into your calendar. Keep your overview. This can also help you next time with insights of what works well and what doesn't.
  5. Reflect on your study schedule. In what aspects did you need more or less time? If you needed more time you can use the extra time you planned for this. Do this with the other days as well. With good regular reflection you will see that your study planning gets better and better.

Need extra time?

As a student, you have rights. This includes extra time you need for assignments, tests and so on. Use this extra time and don't feel uncomfortable taking the time you need.
