Information on guidance and advice during your internship

What you can do yourself:

  • Ask your educational institution for advice about guidance at the internship. For example, what you should tell about your disability, what the internship should take into account and which way of supervision is optimal for you. For example, with an internship coordinator, mentor and study supervisor.
  • Choose an internship lecturer who has knowledge of your situation/disability.
  • Focus on one task at a time and hold everyone accountable.
  • If necessary, ask for additional internship progress interviews with the internship counsellor and internship lecturer.
  • A weekly check-in, for example on Monday at your internship company. Ask if this is possible. Here you can tell us how you are doing and where you stand with your assignments. This can help you to indicate bottlenecks in time.
  • Where possible, see how you can work together or ask advice from an expert. For example, former students or other students with a support request.
  • After you have been hired, ask your company if you can start a week (or two) earlier (often during the summer holidays). In these weeks you can ground yourself, meet your colleagues, read internal documents and make preparations. As soon as you start on September 1 or February, you will start with your school assignment.
  • Focus on one task at a time and hold everyone accountable. Need rest? "One day I told my director if I could take a nap in front of everyone for an hour. That was crazy for me and for the other person, but after that I was productive again," says Shane's experience. After your internship, it is important that you, together with your lecturer and supervisor, reflect on what went particularly well. Based on this, you can make a plan for when you return to school.
