Employers do not always have the same experience with interns with disabilities. Perhaps they have prejudices or simply don't dare. There are several reasons why you might or might not tell them about your disability. It is very personal and depends on many factors. There is no golden rule, no generally applicable advice.

Information about reporting your disability at your internship

  • In many cases it is wise to report your disability. You can then, possibly with the guidance of an internship supervisor, explain what your limitation entails and what obstacles you may encounter during the internship. Together with your internship company, you can then think at an early stage about tasks that suit you well and that you can perform well. If necessary, also indicate what you need at your internship, bring this positively.
  • Explain to your manager and your colleagues at your internship what you have, but especially what you can do, what you are here to do and what they should pay attention to in order to help you.
  • It is also not mandatory to report a disability during the application procedure. It is an option to do this later in the procedure: for example, not in the letter, but in the first or second interview.
