Possibilities for study financing

  • If you are registered as a student at college or university, you can get money for your education: study financing. Student finance consists of various components, such as a (supplementary) grant, interest-bearing loan, student travel product and tuition fee credit.
  • Students who take longer to complete their studies due to a disability can receive an additional 12 months of student finance as a performance-related grant.

There are various options to support you financially during your studies. Check out the possibilities below.

Basic grant

The basic grant is a performance grant and will be converted into a gift if you complete your degree within 10 years. If not, you will have to repay the total amount with interest.

If you study with a functional impairment, you will receive an extra year's basic grant instead of a loan when your study financing is extended. For the conditions for extension and the amount of the remission, see Study delay: extension of the performance grant.

Basic grant amounts

  • students living at home: € 110.30 per month
  • students living away from home: € 439.20 per month (€ 274.90 basic grant + € 164.30 temporary increase due to the purchasing power measure)

Read more about the conditions of the basic grant here.

Higher education students living away from home

For academic year 2023-2024, students living away from home will receive an increase of €164.30 per month in the basic grant or basic allowance. This temporary measure is designed to give you an extra year of help as students and pupils also face sharply rising prices. Read more about the conditions (purchasing power measures) here.

Benefit from loan system (2015-2023)

If you studied for one or more years during the loan system (2015-2023), you did not receive a basic grant during that period. You will receive a financial allowance for this.

Conditions

  • You were entitled to student finance. It does not matter whether you applied for it or not.
  • You studied for at least 12 months of your official (nominal) duration under the loan scheme.
  • You earned or obtained your degree within the 10-year degree period.
  • If you were only entitled to a tuition fee credit or a lifelong learning credit, you do not qualify for this allowance. Read more about the conditions here.

Studievoucher

If you were a higher education student in the period 2015-2016 to 2018-2019 who first received student finance, you received a study voucher if you completed your degree on time. You could use the voucher for a new study. Instead of this voucher, you will now receive a sum of money. This will be offset against your study debt or paid out if there is no study debt. It no longer matters if you start a new study. Read more about the conditions here.
