Transportation problems during your degree programme or internship

When you encounter problems with transportation, this may have a number of different causes. It might, for instance, be because your own mobility is limited due to a chronic illness or physical disability. Perhaps you are unable to get to your educational institution or internship without modified transportation. You might be unable to bring your study materials with you to your educational institution, or maybe you cannot find a parking space close to your educational buildings or internship company. All these factors may affect your academic performance.

This is what I need or might need

Support with transportation

A range of facilities, accommodations and schemes are available at your educational institution and nationally, which may be very helpful to you and might make it easier to achieve success in your degree programme. As a student with transportation-related problems, you might have a need for the following:

  • Guidance and advice. There are a number of people at school who could help you with this. Get in touch with these people if you encounter obstacles during your degree programme.
  • Transportation. When you are a student with a disability or a special need, it can sometimes be more difficult to get to the buildings in which your lectures are held. This might be because you have difficulty using public transportation, because you need a specially modified car or because you are unable to drive a car yourself. For this reason, facilities exist that may help you with regard to transportation.

Have a look at the other facilities, accommodations or schemes that might be helpful for you, too.

Tips

Attending class and learning

Antwoord
  • Parking space: look up where the closest parking space is, or ask someone, before you go.
  • Parking pass: if you will be driving your car to class, request a parking pass so you can park in the car park.
  • Accessibility: under the Accessibility of Buildings and Businesses Act of 2017 (Wet toegankelijkheid bedrijven en gebouwen 2017), buildings belonging to research universities, universities of applied sciences and other organisations must be made accessible for disabled persons. If you have encountered a building that is not accessible, you have the right to request that it be made accessible via your study adviser or study counsellor.
  • Webcam/online lectures: you can use a webcam for lessons you are unable to attend or online classes that can be looked up via the internet or intranet.
  • No first period: talk to your study adviser about the possibility of avoiding classes in the first period of each day to accommodate issues with getting up, transportation and so on.

Transporting your study materials

Antwoord
  • Digital: you can have your textbooks digitised or bring them with you in digital form on your laptop or tablet.
  • Extra set: extra books that you can leave at your educational institution, in addition to the set you keep at home.
  • Make copies: bring a photocopied portion of a book with you.
  • Library: you can read and/or study in the library, so you do not need to take your books home with you.
  • Read along: read along with a classmate during lectures instead of bringing your own lesson material.
  • Carrying materials: get help with carrying and lifting.
  • Trolley: use a wheeled suitcase or shopping trolley.
  • Lockers: ask if there are lockers you can use to store your books at school.
